With a population of just 4,000, the people of Armonk certainly love their pizza. At times, the town has hosted 5,6, even 7 restaurants. The one constant? Broadway North Pizzeria. Since its establishment many years ago, Broadway has built an army of passionate customers. When the restaurant burned down last spring, these followers remained loyal until the restaurant reopened. Recently, however, Nick’s Pizza, while not located in the hub of the town, has swayed many once-loyal Broadway customers. Both restaurants are known for their thin crust pies and numerous speciality slices. But today, I will decide, which pizzeria, Broadway North, the OG, or Nick’s, the newcomer, reigns supreme?
To do so, I tried a plain cheese slice from each restaurant as well as an additional specialty slice that was recommended by an employee. Disclaimer: Numerous specialty slices from both restaurants were not available.
Broadway North Pizzeria: Plain Cheese Slice
Instantly, it becomes obvious why this Armonk staple has drawn such a crowd of loyal supporters. The slice is colorful, paper thin, extremely light in weight, and while it does have firm structural support, it also possesses the classic New York flop you are always looking for. I take my first bite into the slice. The sauce is tangy and sweet. The taste of mozzarella is strong, yet does not disrupt the overall balance of flavor. The singular issue I have with this slice is: the crust lacks enough doughiness for a fulfilling bite.
Nick’s Pizza: Plain Cheese Slice
At first glance, I was amazed by how much larger this slice was than Broadway’s. Absolutely Massive. It’s nice to see that the slice is cooked well done, an aspect that was lacking in Broadway’s slice. As a result, it does not have much flop, which is usually okay for me. At first bite, “Crunch!”- it has amazing crisp. The crust is also delicious. Sadly, the cheese was bland and the sauce was nothing special.
Nick’s Pizza: Chicken Parm Slice
Once again, Nick’s delivers with a ginormous slice of pizza. Unlike Nick’s plain, this slice appears to have even more cheese and a little bit extra cook on its edges. When I took my first bite, the crisp that I thought I would enjoy, was actually quite overwhelming. One could say that this slice was even burned. That being said the chicken cutlet pieces were excellent, flavorful and crunchy. The extra cheese to accommodate this specialty slice was certainly a nice touch. Finally, the crust was doughy and delicious.
Broadway North Pizzeria: Penne Vodka Slice
Wow! Loaded with pasta, vodka sauce, and melted buffalo mozzarella on top, I can’t wait to get a piece of this slice. After I take my first bite, my mouth immediately bursts with flavor. The fresh mozz is certainly a plus for me. The pasta, which may be even better than the pizza itself (and that’s saying something), is delicious- my favorite part being its crispy, slightly burned edges. And finally, while I was originally skeptical about the inclusion of vodka sauce as opposed to traditional marinara, the sweetness of the vodka sauce only enhanced the slice’s overall flavor. The one downside of this slice though is how heavy it is. That being said, this is completely understandable considering that this pizza is loaded with toppings. Overall, Broadway knocked it out of the park with this penne vodka slice!
The Verdict
Don’t get me wrong- all four slices from both Broadway and Nick’s were exceptional. I recommend that you give both places a try. With that said, there can only be one winner. The pizzeria that won this round of FOOD FIGHT delivered on all the essentials of classic New York Pizza, while also showing its creativity though its specialty slice.
Winner: Broadway North Pizzeria
