Is there anything better than ice cream? Easy answer: there’s not! It’s the ideal after-dinner food, the best thing to eat on a hot day, it is the perfect dessert. So, for today, we have pitted the world’s top ice cream brands against each other. In the right corner, we have Ben & Jerry’s. Known for their crazy flavor combinations, creative names, and whimsical packaging, Ben and Jerry’s has stolen the heart of many ice cream fanatics. In the left corner, there is Häagen Dazs. Sticking to the basics, Häagen Dazs has mastered the art of making simple yet absolutely delicious ice cream. While the two brands differ greatly in their style and approach, each has an equally strong case for the best tasting ice cream.
To settle such a lasting debate in the most effective and efficient manner, I tried a single flavor from Häagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s, specifically each of their “best” flavor (note: this was determined after extensive online research). Unsurprisingly, for Ben & Jerry’s, this was Half Baked: a chocolate and vanilla ice cream base containing chocolate brownies and chunks of chocolate chip cookie dough. And for Häagen Dazs, it was Caramel Cone: a caramel ice cream base with bits of chocolate-cover cone and caramel swirls. So, the question remains, which ice cream brand, Häagen Dazs or Ben & Jerry’s, reigns supreme? Let’s find out.
Häagen Dazs Caramel Cone
Removing the lid reveals the distinctive beige color of the caramel base, which includes tons of chocolate-covered cone pieces that lie throughout. When I take the first bite, my mouth explodes with flavor. The pieces of cone provide a satisfying crunch in addition to a delicious yet subtle chocolate taste. Though produced in a factory, you would never know it; the caramel base tastes extremely fresh. Yet, the star of this ice cream is clearly the caramel swirls. The caramel is perfectly gooey, perfectly rich, and salty and sweet at the same time. Every bite is the same- flawless.
Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked
At first site, Half Baked looks absolutely decadent, consisting of a vanilla/chocolate base filled with chocolate chip cookie dough and brownie pieces. The chocolate ice cream is rich and delicious on its own, but does overpower the more mild vanilla flavor. The gobs of cookie dough, my favorite aspect of Half Baked, are extremely sweet and possess a moist, squishy texture. The brownies are oh so chocolatey, dark chocolatey (the better kind!), and provide a nice compliment to the sweeter cookie dough. However, the brownies are more chewy than I would like. Unique deliciousness in every bite- that’s Half Baked for you.
The Verdict
Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked encompasses everything you could want in your ice cream: chocolate and vanilla, cookie dough and brownies. But like I said, Häagen Dazs Caramel Cone was simply perfection.
Winner: Häagen Dazs
